CircPlastX
Circularity data space for the plastics industry
CIRCPLASTX aims to develop a data space dedicated to help the plastics industry in increasing circularity through data sharing along the value chain. Over the course of the years, societal and regulatory pressure has mounted on industry to increase the use of recycled materials and to share more information on the materials used in products or parts with the aim to increase their overall circularity. This increased need to traceability and transparency concerns different suppliers and product developers have to provide (f.i. via REACH, ESPR Ecodesign and sustainable product regulation, or the packaging specific regulation: PPWR) and novel stakeholders in the information value chain are being added (for instance recycling companies, NGOs or oversight and auditing bodies, lifecycle analysis service providers, material test labs). There is a myriad of challenges to be tackled in the pursuit of these goals. On the data-side, CIRCPLASTX aims to help SMEs and on the side of the plastics value chain by offering a one-stop shop for the exchange of relevant data, be it on the product, the materials or the manufacturing process. Combining these three data types can offer novel insight and a more fine-grained analysis of the environmental impact for this sector. Besides connecting datasets and data sources, we aim to develop 3 services: MaaS for recycled plastics, data quality for substances, and LCA data rating. All these services will be co-developed and tested with industry partners, while simultaneously serving as the basis for training- and onboarding methods of CIRCPLASTX. With key expert partners in both plastics manufacturing and data space development, we believe this data space is crucial in achieving Green Deal-and digitisation of industry goals as posed in the DEP, contributing to both competitiveness, resilience and innovation for SMEs in the sector.
